Become a Mississippi Notary Public

The processing of applications for notary public in Mississippi are done in the Business Services Division of the Mississippi Secretary of State. For first time notary public applicants, you are recommended to review the Mississippi Notary Law.

Requirements to become a notary public in Mississippi:

  1. At least 18 years old
  2. A legal resident of Mississippi for at least 30 days prior to application
  3. Able to read and write English
  4. No major convictions

Steps to become a Mississippi Notary Public:

1. Complete the application form for notary public commission. Read and follow the instructions carefully.

2. Get a voter registration certification from your county registrar.

3. Submit the completed application form together with a $25.00 fee, to:

4. After a full review of your application, the Secretary of State's Office forwards the application to the Office of the Governor for approval; and sends you a copy of your pre-certification.

5. Once you receive the pre-certification copy, get the required $5,000 surety bond and official oath of office.

6. File the bond and oath in the Secretary of State's Office.

7. Wait for your original commission to be mailed by the Secretary of State.

Term of Office

Each notary public in Mississippi is given by the Secretary of State a term of four (4) years.
