Become a New Jersey Notary Public

The State Treasurer in the State of New Jersey is the one who appoints new notaries public in New Jersey. For first time candidates, it is recommended that you read first the New Jersey Notary Public Manual.

Requirements to become a notary public in New Jersey:

  1. At least 18 years old
  2. A resident or employee in the State of New Jersey
  3. Should have no major convictions
  4. Able to read and write the English language

Steps to become a New Jersey Notary Public:

1. Complete the notary application form. Read and follow the instructions carefully.

2. Obtain an endorsement from a member of the Legislature.

3. Prepare a $25.00 filing fee via check made payable to "Treasurer, State of

New Jersey".

4. Submit all the required documents and filing fee to:

5. Once the application is approved, the State Treasurer's Office will send a Notary Public Commission Certificate and Oath Qualification Certificate to you.

Term of Office

The State Treasurer appoints each New Jersey Notary Public for a term of five (5) years.
